@icey, I am not sure Chris's AIX blog is the right place to ask DB2 questions. Nor hijacking a thread from 2010 to ask question in 2015. Nonetheless the question passed moderation. . The DB2 documentation clearly specifies the supported platforms for DB2 backup and restore operations, and their groupings. For example the information is available in the DB2 v9.7 LUW Knowledge Center (http://www-01.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSEPGG_9.7.0/com.ibm.db2.luw.kc.doc/welcome.html).

Hi all, Can I take an AIX/Sun UNIX DB2 backup and restore to Linux on Power? They are both Big Endian so I am going to assume this will work, but will be searching docs to confirm. AIX is still the best mainstream OS on the planet in my opinion, it's decades of stable code, tons of online features, deployed in huge environments, and IBM has been around for 100 years and isn't going anywhere anytime soon. But software vendors keep moving features over to Linux, it's making me sad to be honest lol. SAP HANA, for example, now runs on Power but this is considered the new kid on the block and the "off" spec. Derek

I stand by the comments I made 4 years ago in 2010. AIX, in my opinion, is a great UNIX OS. However, the shift in the market to Linux is unavoidable. The AIX market will probably not grow a great deal over the next few years. But I don't see AIX disappearing either. IBM have made the right business decision. There is a huge opportunity for Linux on POWER(8) right now. Particularly with the introduction of PowerKVM and the new scale-out POWER8 systems. IBM have the potential to pick up a whole range of new customers from the Linux/x86 market. As I see it, there are two types of workloads/customers at the moment. There are our traditional AIX/IBMi customers that run their mission critical apps on POWER and PowerVM. These customers are unlikely to move off POWER for the sake of it. Then there is the new & emerging workloads, such as Hadoop (Big Data/Analytics), that have typically been placed on Linux/x86. This is where the growth is likely to be over the next 10 years. IBM are now well placed to take a great share of this market with POWER8 and PowerKVM. Having said all of that, AIX still rules. :) I'll continue to support the OS by helping my customers and contributing to the AIX community through my blog and articles. Cheers, Chris

Great article Chris, and I couldn't agree more... However, it does appear that IBM are pushing the Linux on POWER message even more since the introduction of POWER8, do you think that the message still holds true and how do you see the future of AIX? I have seen a large shift with clients now becoming more comfortable with Linux being able to provide them with a cost effective alternative to AIX, and is this perhaps the reasoning for the big Linux on POWER message from IBM? Great post.. do you think you could provide a RAS feature-by-feature comparison between Linux and AIX? Also, do you have any numbers or study references about performance/scalability of Linux.. say on a system like P795? Vishal

Chris, with the take-up of Linux by many companies, it's got me wondering. In the time since you first wrote this blog post, have there been any developments in Linux to make you change your opinion? I don't have enough exposure to Linux to be able to comment myself.
